Hexagonal crystals of Aquamarine are often large and flawless. Sometimes they may be striated, making them like a ribbed cylinder. This is due to erosion. Aquamarine is dichroic showing colourless and deep blue. Some Aquamarine show a chatoyancy (cat's eye effect) when cut en cabochon.
Pale blue glass is easily recognizable as it is singly refractive, whereas aquamarine is doubly refractive.
